5th Annual Doggie Carnival

Welcome to Savannah, America's Most Beautiful City

An early morning rainstorm dampened some hair and some fur, but spirits soared high on the first of May this year for the Fifth Annual Doggie Carnival sponsored by the Humane Society. Within an hour, though, the canine-loving sun gods smiled on Daffin Park and hundreds of dogs and owners cavorted happily through the day.

With free admission to dogs and children accompanied by a paying adult, for many it was a great day for family fun. A carnival atmosphere was accentuated with hot dogs, hamburgers, BBQ, soft pretzels, cotton candy, and live music. The doggies had their own treats and their own events.
Tails wagging, the canines tried agility courses, paw painting, doggie derbies for several sizes of dogs, biscuit eating contest, tail-wagging contest, canine message, as well as generous helpings of treats, including Frosty Paws! To cool off after serious play and contesting, lots of dogs plunged into the ice-filled wading pools for drinks and dunks.

Hank sailed down the raceway, guaranteeing his win of the Doggie Derby. Later in the day, the Chocolate Lab mix gobbled his way to a second win in the Biscuit Eating Contest. The nine month old darling of Wendy Penatello, Hank was rescued at 10 weeks when he was found wandering alone and hungry on Broughton St.
From a handsome King Charles Spaniel in search of a similarly blue-blooded girlfriend, to a bevy of lion-hearted Chihuahuas and the gentle, giant, Great Pyrenees, and a pack of stolid Corgi’s, plus a multitude of others, dogs ruled the day.

Ground Zero heroine, Lt. Canine Molly, retired since her arduous 12 days after 911, came to stroll and greet her countless admirers. Therapy dogs of various breeds ambled about, poised and calm, demonstrating compassionate friendliness of an uncommon kind. Chow mixes of varied permutations proliferated, adding splashes of color with their glowing red coats.

Proud owners applauded, and so did the entire animal loving community at the fine work of Humane Society events director, Mindy Nash, who pulled together dogs, humans, sponsors, booths large and small, into a smooth running party that netted the Society three times the profits of last year’s event. A lot of needy animals will be cared for with the $22,000 plus results!
