The Day Savannah Went to the Dogs

Here's a photo album of last year's Doggie Carnival.

Humans and canines alike had a barkin‘-good, tail-waggin’ time at the Chatham County Human Society’s 6th Annual Doggie Carnival. An estimated 3,000 people and 1,800 dogs cavorted through Forsyth Park, enjoying sunshine and shade, contests and courses throughout the afternoon. More than 62 hosts and booths offered everything from Pooch-Smoochin’ to doggie Chiropractic adjustments, from games to munchies.

SavannahBest’s own booth boasted our AskTheVet columnist, Rachel Peeples, DVM, answering questions about everything from potty training to skin problems, from upper respiratory troubles to behavioral quirks, while her magnificent Akita, Inori, sat in attendance. Adults and kids alike tried their luck at Treats for Toto (winners to be announced soon), and throngs of doggies lapped up Dr. Peeples home baked doggie treats! Cheers went up at the booth when Vayda, our youngest mascot, hauled down a Blue Ribbon for winning the Doggie Derby!

Live music filled the air while happy dogs and grinning humans fattened the coffers of the Chatham County Humane Society to the tune of $33,347.48 net, a 43 percent increase over last year’s all-time best fund raising event.

As Brian King, of Paws and Claws put it, “this was so much fun, for me and my dogs, that I wish they’d throw one of these a month.”

A magnificent variety of dogs came to stay and play, ranging from the stately Irish Wolfhounds and gentle giant Great Danes to diminutive Chihuahuas and dashing Dachshunds. A beautiful German Shepherd mix was on hand, as was a graceful King Charles Spaniel, dozens of lab mixes and chow-mixes, plus virtually every size, breed, shape and age dog imaginable.

Dogs and kids had fun, with little sign of the slightest altercation between anyone, least of all the dogs. And the long-predicted rain held off till the very end.
