If you like seafood—and lots of it at moderate prices—and you like a lively crowd — and a big one — then Uncle Bubba’s is a place for you. That publicity steamroller - otherwise known as Paula Deen - has this place teaming with folks willing to patiently stand in line, even on an early Tuesday evening.

The menu is extensive, featuring pretty much any kind of shellfish you want, ranging from appetizers and salads, including a lovely Caesar, to Po Boys through Seafood Baskets to full blown dinner entrees.

We sampled an assortment of offerings. The Fried Calamari were certainly tender and sweet, tossed with sautéed tomatoes and peppers, but the coating was less crisp than you might expect, possibly because of the liquidity of the veggies. The oysters are exceptional, small, sweet, tender and bursting with fresh from the sea flavor. Scallops, too, are wonderfully fresh and perfectly cooked.

In fact, all of the seafood resonates freshness, but the fried items, especially the French fries, just don’t have the crunch they should.

Crab stuffed flounder sports a crabmeat stuffing packed with succulent crab meat, not too much filler and just the right seasoning. And it’s served with a lovely lemon-chive butter sauce that comes perilously close to overwhelming the delicate texture of the flounder. Nevertheless, it’s a good dish.

In true Southern style, all of the entrees come with a choice of sides. The okra and tomatoes proved to be exceptional, with crisp-tender okra and firm, delicious tomatoes. The turnip greens, too, were pleasingly fresh without a hint of the sogginess that these greens often bring.

There are also Catch of the Day specials featured nightly, and for landlubbers, several offerings, including The Big Bubba, an 18 ounce bone-in Rib Eye steak.

And of course, Key Lime pie is included on the dessert menu.
