Sweet Leaf Smokery
The culinary history of this location began with the storied Restaurant 606, which later moved to City Market to flourish for a number of years before collapsing under the weight of skyrocketing rent. Then came Good Eats, of the fabled mulligatawny soup and the spicy biscuits beloved by all Savannah.
Good Eats was a hard act to follow. The first time I went to Sweet Leaf I remained disgruntled over the loss, and prepared to be disappointed by this newcomer and so I was. I went, I ate; I left, not to return for nearly a year. Whether it was simply my mindset or the food has changed, I’ll never really know. Likely, it’s a combination. But when I returned after hearing about the Corn Pudding, I was in for a wondrous surprise! Every morsel I ate and sampled proved excellent. The Cuban Panini, pulled pork, spiced chicken, with onion and cheese and lovely horseradish mustard grilled on a Cuban-style panini, proved a big winner all around. So was the Pulled Pork Plate, beautifully spiced and tender. Along with the pork were the corn pudding that drew me in, which proved to be among the best I’ve ever eaten, and some tender, fresh collard greens. A friend had the Smoked Salmon BLT, a traditional BLT piled high with salmon, sauced with a spicy aioli, and pronounced it fit for a queen. Another visit, and the Beef Panini and the House Salad, also proved to be big winners, as was the Roasted Vegetable Panini served up with a delightful roasted pecan pesto. The wine and beer selections are small, but well thought out and should be sufficient to please almost anyone. Next time, I’ll check out the Saturday and Sunday brunch menus, and I’m confident their contents will be equally delicious. Questions?Comments? Email Cima. Sweet Leaf Smokery & Eatery |
