Tucked into what once was City Lights Theatre and earlier, the Avon Theatre, nestles Season’s Asian Bistro. I’d passed it walking down Broughton many a time, noticed the sign, but somehow it never really beckoned to me. Then, at the end of a recent Frenetic Friday, a friend mentioned that she’d had the best duck she’d ever eaten in Savannah at this place and so, when I was wandering with a friend down Broughton a bit later, we decided to give it a try.

And what a delightful surprise this lovely Pan-Asian bistro turned out to be! Given that this was the end of the aforementioned FF, there was no decision-making necessary to start off with an icy martini. What appetizer to accompany it with proved more difficult.

The extensive Sushi menu beckoned. After debating between the Spider Roll (fried soft shell crab tempura and cucumber) and the Massago (smelt roe) amongst other enticements, I settled on the latter, while my non-sushi eating companion opted for the Season’s Satay. The Massago, luxurious mounds of brilliant red roe piled into smelt skin wrappers proved as luscious to eat as to gaze upon. Even my companion had a couple of bites he thoroughly enjoyed. The Chicken Satay was as Satay should be—tender, delightfully peanut flavored and moist.

Tempted to try the fabled duck, I couldn’t resist another favorite of mine— Thai Green Curry. Slices of pork with Asian vegetables and basil in a creamy curry sauce melted in the depth of its seductive flavor.

My companion’s Lemon-Grass Shrimp sautéed with garlic and onions in a velvety lemon-grass sauce was equally lovely. “The best shrimp I’ve eaten in the Southeast,” he said.

The menu offers a large and enticing selection of salads, entrees, fried noodle dishes, soup noodle dishes with plenty of vegetarian fare in each category.

Having gobbled down every last morsel of our plates, neither of us had room for dessert, but they sounded tempting, especially the mango, coconut and green tea ice cream.

As in many Asian restaurants, the décor is charming—a waterfall in back, with palm-like fans, lots of bamboo, and subtle lighting effects.
