At first, I thought it was infatuation. That first bite of the deeply rich, aromatic,
authentic Shepherd’s Pie, redolent with the heavenly taste of real lamb, soared my soul into culinary heaven. I hadn’t, and haven’t, tasted anything this good since eons ago in a pub outside of London. The meat — genuine lamb, not mutton! — the potatoes — best mashed potatoes pure perfection - the small fresh peas and bits of carrot, all combined into simple sybaritic delight.
On the side rested a little house salad. Crisp and cool with fresh-from-the-garden flavor. I might never have sampled another morsel in this place, except that I finally looked up at my dining companion, who normally spends a disproportionate amount of his day-dreaming life revisiting the great corned beef dishes of his past, reminiscing about them, complaining about the lack of corned beef in Savannah, and generally obsessing about corned beef. He was engrossed…and smiling! So I had to take a small taste. Delicious. More intriguing to this once upon a time Californian, though, were the onion rings he had on the side. Onion rings, good ones, are another of my lifelong passions and a bite of this thick, juicy, crisp, sweet onion coated in a light lager batter set me off again. Perhaps it wasn’t infatuation, after all….
On subsequent visits, I steeled myself against the lure of another Shepherd’s Pie for the time being, and vowed to try more of this intriguing menu. The Finnegan’s Wake Fish and Chips, Guinness batter fried cod, served with crispy chips and, natch! Malt vinegar proved to be another winner. Fish and Chips don’t get better than this. I sampled the Asian Potstickers appetizer and was delighted to find that unlike most pot stickers that turn up in non-Asian spots, they were neither soggy nor tasteless. Succulent fresh wrappers are filled with pork and shrimp, sautéed in sesame oil and enhanced with an irresistible citrus ponza. Recently, a new appetizer, Cod Bites, appeared on the menu. Tempura battered cod bites served with homemade tartar sauce proved to be excellent, and could make a light lunch as well as an appetite teaser. Salads have proved to be as finely tuned as everything else on this menu. My favorite, the Connemara Cobb salad, with grilled chicken, bacon, egg, tomato and onion on a bed of field greens is both refreshing and substantial. So is the sensuous Pesto Chicken salad, tossed in a creamy pesto atop a bed of greens. Burgers are what burgers should be: plump, angus beef with whatever you’d like. My personal favorite is the Oscar Wilde version, with bleu cheese and all the fixin’s. Then and there I concluded that my affair with Murphy’s Law wasn’t infatuation at all, but a pure, everlasting love. On my next visit, I’m back to the Shepherd’s Pie. Slainte! | There are many different law firms for different things, but not many of them fight for the rights of mesothelioma victims. Many people don't know to much about mesothelioma, but those living with cancer know how serious it can be. With the different Mesothelioma attorneys and mesothelioma law suits you would think more people would be aware of mesothelioma. |
