From the outside, the Kao (Thai for rice) resembles an undistinguished roadside eatery. One step into the place offers a pleasant surprise. The room is very large, the kind of place that could easily look like a big open barn. Instead, platforms have been installed, giving the restaurant several different levels. The walls, painted in a burnt orange, are softened by tall and lush greenery throughout.

The food, of course, is what counts. The classic Thai appetizer, Pork Satay, features the tenderest pork I've tasted in many a meal, served with peanut sauce and a delightful small cucumber salad. The Spring Rolls, deep fried vegetable rolls in a rice skin, are light and delectable.

Pad Thai, said to be the most popular dish in Thailand, is one of the all-time great comfort foods. Stir fried rice noodles, rich with egg, laced with bean sprouts and a variety of seasonings, and lavished here with shrimp, topped with peanuts, is simple goodness. Given my choice, I'd like a bit more of the Thai triumvirate of tamarind, chilies and lime, but still, the dish is lovely and satisfying.

The Cashew Nut chicken, with perfectly sautéed chicken enhanced with cashews, onion, red and green bell pepper strips, all subtly seasoned with a light chili sauce is another winner.

A variety of curries are offered, including a Red Curry Duck, no doubt my next choice, and a wonderful looking Seafood Basket of baked, mixed seafood in coconut milk and Thai seasonings.

The Specials can be really Special! On a recent visit, an appetizer of Fried Calamari turned out to be delectably crisp, light as air, and tasted fresh from the sea.

The Kao also offers a couple of lovely looking salads, a nice choice of soups, and an intriguing if small, list of desserts.
