This lovely restaurant, tucked into The Marshall House, has been a favorite of mine ever since it opened several years ago under another guise. But as 45 Bistro, it has reached its pinnacle.
The appetizers here are so delicious that I have a hard time making it to the entrees. My unquestionable favorite is the Pan Fried Veal Sweetbreads, served with sweet potato shoestrings and a pomegranate glaze. It's too bad that sweetbreads are so neglected in Savannah and in fact, in much of the United States, because they can be one of the great gifts of culinary artistry. Other "irresistibles" are the Prince Edward Island Mussels, served with a citrus lemongrass coconut milk, the seared Ahi tuna, and the open faced Mushroom Ravioli. Salads, from the Caesar to the Roulade of Braised Leeks, are superb. However, lovely as the appetizers and salads can be, the entrees should not be missed, at least not too often. The Osso Buco with an authentic risotto is a rare treat, as is the Lasagna of Jumbo Sea Scallops and wilted spinach. There is also a Filet of Salmon, gratineed with asiago cheese, fire roasted tomato and kalamato olive ratatouille, served with stuffed hearts of palm and artichokes. Filet Mignon, Free Range chicken, bourbon marinated pork chops and a lamb t-bone are also among the offerings.
Desserts, from the Gran Marnier banana spring rolls to Creme Brulee, are scrumptious. Jan.2004
